Abstract

English Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Muhamad Hasbi, S.Pd.I., M.A. The aim of this research is to reveal students’ difficulties toward listening comprehension and strategies to overcome the difficulties in listening at Kampung Bahasa class. The method used in this research is descriptive design with qualitative approach. The qualitative data are obtained from observation and interview. To support qualitative data, the researcher also uses a minor quantitative data obtain from the questionnaire. The subjects of this research are 30 students and 8 English teachers of Kampung Bahasa. The results of this study show that students’ at Kampung Bahasa of Edi Mancoro Islamic Boarding School have difficulties in listening comprehension validate by the data matchness between students’ and teachers’ perspectives on the matter. The difficulties are found to be majorly in relation to the accents of the native speakers, condition of the class, when the speakers spoke quickly, limited English vocabulary, and lack of concentration. Besides, the listening strategies share by the students and the teachers suggest the use of song and movie media, and mix English-Bahasa language interaction in the listening class, the students’ mood and interest build-up, and more practice of speed listening.
