Abstract

ABSTRACT Dwi, Nugroho Alvin. 2020. The Correlation Between Emotional Intelligence and Foreign Language Anxiety (A Study on Mahasantri at Ma’had Al-Jami’ah IAIN Salatiga). A graduating paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Institute for Islamic Studies of Salatiga. Counselor: Heru Saputra, M. A. The goals of the study were; (1) To describe the students’ emotional intelligence on santri of Ma’had Al-Jami’ah IAIN Salatiga, (2) To describe the students’ foreign language anxiety on santri of Ma’had Al-Jami’ah IAIN Salatiga, (3) To find out whether there is or no significant correlation between the emotional intelligence and foreign language anxiety on santri of Ma’had Al-Jami’ah IAIN Salatiga. The study was quantitative correlative research. The subjects were 42 santri at Ma’had Al-Jami’ah IAIN Salatiga. The researcher employed questionnaire, foreign language classroom anxiety scales, and documentation to gather the data. Furthermore, the data was analysed and interpreted through quantitative procedure using SPSS v24. The result indicated that that the quality of emotional intelligence of student’s on Ma’had Al-Jami’ah IAIN Salatiga were good. The highest score is 120, the lowest score is 60, and the mean is 99.5. Moreover, there was good quality of foreign language anxiety of student’s on Ma’had Al-Jami’ah IAIN Salatiga. It could be indicated by the result that the highest score is 131, the lowest score is 33 and the mean is 96. However, the researcher not found the correlation between emotional intelligence and foreign language anxiety and the result is 0.052 with a positive correlation. It means that there is a in the same direction relationship between the X and Y variables, if the X variable increases, the Y variable increases. After knowing the result to table of r product pearson moment with the number of subject (N) = 42 and significant level 5% is 0.304. Because rxy < r table it means no significant and it was found that there is no correlation between these variables. Therefore, the hypothesis was rejected that there was positive correlation between emotional intelligence and foreign language anxiety.
