ABSTRACT Chomsatun. 2020. AN ERROR ANALYSIS ON THE USE OF PUNCTUATION WRITTEN BY THE SECOND SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF IAIN SALATIGA IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2019/2020. A graduating paper, English Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Mr. Hammam, S.Pd., M.Pd., Ph.D This research is about an error analysis on the use of punctuation written by the second-semester students of English education department of IAIN Salatiga in the academic year 2019/2020. The objectives of this research were to find out the types of punctuation errors written by second-semester students and to find out the the dominant errors maded by the second-semester students of the English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga in using punctuation. The instrument of the research was tests and document. To answer the problem, the researcher use descriptivewith quantitative approach and validity. The result of this research showed that the types of punctuation errors written by the second-semester students of the English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga that found in the first test are error omission comma, error addition (using comma, dash, semicolon, and hyphen), misinformation (using capitalization, full stop, comma, apostrophe, colon, semicolon, slash, hyphen, parentheses, and dash), and misordering (using semicolon and parentheses). In the second test, that are found error omission (comma, full stop, hyphen), error addition (comma, apostrophe, colon, and semicolon), misinformation (capitalization and hyphen, and misordering using comma. Meanwhile, the dominant errors maded by the second-semester students of the English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga in using punctuation are omission comma. There are found 17 errors or 100% error of omission comma in the first test and 22 errors or 78,57% error of omission comma in the second test. Keywords: Error, Mistake, Error Analysis, Punctuation
