Abstract
The objectives of this research are: to find out the students‟ perceptions about Kampung English and to find out the students‟ attitudes about Kampung English at the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Plus Salatiga. The approach of study was quantitative research with survey study. The technique of collecting data by using online questionnaire to find out the students‟ perceptions and attitudes about Kampung English. This study proves that the students‟ perceptions about Kampung English are positive, it can be seen from each statements about the students responses of the questionnaire, 54.3% (25 students) agree that joining Kampung English can make them feel motivated to memorize more vocabulary, 54.4% (25 students) disagree that joining Kampung English isn‟t enjoyable experience for them, 65.2% (30 students) disagree that they are not satisfied with the material that is given in Kampung English, 56.5% (26 students) agree that joining Kampung English, their interest in learning English increased, and 69.6% (32 students) agree that they feel enough with the time given during Kampung English. The students‟ attitudes about Kampung English are positive, 45.7% (21 students) disagree that Kampung English making of the participants get bored, 56.5% (26 students) agree that Kampung English making of them like English, 43.5% (20 students) agree with the ideas about teaching method in Kampung English, 28 students (60.9%) do not absolutely agree or disagree that Kampung English increase their confident, 21 students (45.7%) relatively stay in between agree and uncertain category that Kampung English stimulates them to be active participants in the learning process, 50.0% (23 students) do not absolutely agree or disagree that Kampung English helps them in understanding other fields or subject, 43.5% (20 students) disagree that Kampung English does not provide much opportunity for participants to talk, 43.5% (20 students) disagree that many learning materials in Kampung English do not get in the class, 54.3% (25 students) agree that Kampung English can be a medium communicative entertainment in learning English, and 58.7% (27 students) disagree with the idea about joining Kampung English doesn‟t improve achievement of participants in the class. Based on the result of the study, it can be concluded that the students‟ perceptions and attitudes about Kampung English are positive.
