Abstract

This study examined the pronunciation of consonants /θ/ and /ð/ by the seventh-semester students of IAIN Salatiga. Twenty students of English education department were chosen to be the sample for the audiotape observation. The respondents were asked to read 20 words containing the sound of interdental fricatives. This research aimed to identify the participants’ errors in pronouncing consonant /θ/ and /ð/ and to find out which sound that is mostly mispronounced by the students. The writer used a descriptive qualitative for the methodology of this research. From the research, there were found some kind of mistakes in pronouncing the sound of interdental fricatives, the sound /θ/ was substituted by sound /t/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/, /ð/, /d/, /s/, and indistinct or inarticulate. Furthermore, there were found 4 substitute sounds for consonant /ð/, they are /d/, /t/, /tʃ/, and /θ/. The most problematic word to pronounce is “soothing”. From 20 respondents, only one person who pronounced it right. Meanwhile, the easiest or unproblematic word to pronounce is “weather" which 17 out of 20 people pronounced correctly. The result also shows that the sound /θ/ is determined as the most frequent mispronounced sound, because from 200 utterances there were 113 incorrect pronunciation, meanwhile for the sound /ð/, there were only found 97 incorrect pronunciation.
