Abstract

The purposes of this study are to find out how teachers teach English vocabulary using word match, the problems experienced by students in learning vocabulary using word match, and the response of the students in learning vocabulary using word match in 7h grade students at SMP N 1 Tengaran in the 2019/2020 school year. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The study was conducted on June 22-29, 2020. Data were collected from observations and interviews with teachers and students of grade 7 H SMP N 1 Tengaran for the 2019/2020 school year. The research results on the use of word match in vocabulary learning (synonyms and antonyms) that have been carried out show that this method is very helpful for students and teachers in learning vocabulary easily. However, due to COVID-19, learning is done online, so the teacher explains and provides learning materials about vocabulary through the WhatsApp application by sending files through chat groups. For problems experienced, the teacher cannot explain the subject matter directly and monitor students' ability to understand vocabulary. Meanwhile, students think that English is difficult. They are not familiar with English, so it is difficult for them to distinguish the meaning of one word from another. In addition, students have limitations such as they do not have handphones, use a parent's or relative's handphone, and live far from the internet network, so students feel it is difficult to learn the material provided by the teacher. The student's response was very good. Learning with word match could solve problems in learning vocabulary easily, and besides that, students did not feel bored in the lessons given by their teachers. Keywords: vocabulary, learning, word match, student, teacher.
