Abstract

ABSTRACT Dewi, Rizqiya Dwi Kumala. 2020. An Error Analysis of Using Gerund Made by the Second year students of English Department of IAIN Salatiga in the academic year 2020/2021. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Institute for Islamic Studies Salatiga. Counselor: Miftachudin, M.A. The aims of this research are (1) to find out the types of students’ error in using gerund, (2) to find out the most dominant error in using gerund made by students. In this study, the researcher used quantitative method in a form of descriptive analysis (percentage) that included collecting data students’ test, analyzing and interpreting data. In collecting data, the researcher used students’ test as the instrument. The object of this research is the second year students of English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga in the Academic year 2020/2021. The researcher gave the students multiple choice questions that consist of 20 items, 6 items in the form of gerund as subject, 7 items in the form of gerund as direct object, and 7 items in the form of gerund as after preposition. The result of the research showed that there were 60 errors or 28.04% students made errors in using gerund as subject. 77 errors or 35.98% students made errors in using gerund as direct object and also 77 errors or 35.98% students made errors in using gerund as after preposition. The result of this research also reveal that the most dominant error in using gerund occurs in the two types of errors namely using gerund as subject and as direct object.
