Abstract

The paper aims to analyze the wellknown maxim of the sixth president of the Republic of Indonesia entitled YES WE CAN. This maxim is very popular in Indonesia since the presidential election in 2004. Through this maxim directly or indirectly leads Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono elected as the President of the Republic of Indonesia two periods of time (2005-2009 and 2010-2014). Method used in this research is qualitative-descriptive and the unit of analysis is a text found in one of articles published by Dino Patti Jalal, the presidential staff and spokesman on International Relation Section. Meanwhile, the analysis focuses on three issues such as context of culture, context of situation and interpretation. The context of culture explores the power of language on establishing a new poltical culture in Indonesia. The context of situation investigates how language is used to reach a power. This investigation consists of three aspects: field, tenor and mode of the presidential maxim. To sum up, this paper evaluates the interpretation of the presidential maxim. This part also conveys the intention of the speaker (writer) delivering the jargon through a text and how the hearer (reader) to construe it.
