Abstract
This research is about error analysis on the use of simple past tense in English narrative text made by the students of SMKN 1 Tengaran in the academic year of 2016/2017. The objectives of this research were to find out types of errors that occurs on the use of simple past tense in English narrative text written by the students of SMKN 1 Tengaran in the academic year of 2016/2017 and to find out the profile of the students’ type of errors on the use of simple past tense in English narrative text written by the students of SMKN 1 Tengaran in the academic year of 2016/2017. The instrument of the research was test and documentation. The research methodology was descriptive qualitative. The result of this research showed that there are four types of errors that occur; they are error of omission, error of addition, error of misordering and error of misformation. From the data analysis the researcher found that the most dominant error that occurs with the percentage 65.09% is error of misfromation with total 69 from 106 errors. Error of omission relates to the absence of an item that must appear in a well-formed utterance. Error of addition relates to the presence of an item that must not appear in well-formed utterances.Error of misformation relates to the use of the wrong form of the morpheme or structure.Error of misordering relates to the incorrect placement of a morpheme or group of morphemes in an utterance.
