Abstract
The present study investigates the cooperative principle used by teachers toward teachers’ talk. The aims are to know what the kinds and the reasons of cooperative principle that used by English teachers. This is descriptive qualitative study. The data is collected from recorded and then transcribed of teacher’s talk during English teaching learning process. It was found that the most cooperative principle used by teachers is cooperative principle of quantity and quality. The cooperative principle of quantity appears for 12 times out of 35 maxims or 34,20% of all the maxims listed. It same with cooperative principle of quality.The others types of maxim with least percentage of infrequently used by the teacher such as maxim of relation that appears 17,40 % and maxim of manner 14,20%.The reasons why the teachers used the cooperative principle of quantity and relation are the teachers should give the true information/true answers of students’ question, sometimes the teachers must make short explanation, using familiar dictions, must give sufficient information no more than the students’ necessity, they must avoid disoriented of her explanation, must convey the message or information about the materials to all of students and give explanation or answers based on realities.
