Abstract
The research aims to 1) identify type of emojis found in teachers' and students' interaction on WhatsApp group; 2) examine the pragmatics of the function of the emoji in the teacher and students interaction on WhatsApp group. This research used qualitative method to analyze the emoji of detailed view of informants in a natural conversation on WhatsApp group. The researcher used conversation of 13 classes from 5 universities in Indonesia. The population of the research is 13 teachers and 439 students from universities in Indonesia. The researcher used observation and documentation to collect the data. The results of this student are: (1) This research found 1.037 emojis.The emojis frequently used were 127 folded hand emojis type ( , , and ); (2) Th pragmatic function of emojis; illocutionary, contextual, and competitive. Illocutionary function concerns the situation in which emojis were used to convey feeling and minimize FTA. The contextual function concerns the situation in which emojis were used as jokes markers to express the speaker's emotional state.
