Abstract

ABSTRACT Yuliana, Nabila. 2021. Students’ Challenges in Learning English Using WhatsApp at Speaking for Academic Purposes of the 3rd Semester of English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga in the Academic Year 2020/2021. A graduating paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Institute for Islamic Studies of Salatiga. Counsellor: Dra., Widyastuti M.Pd. This research aims (a) to analyze students’ challenges in learning English using WhatsApp at Speaking for Academic Purposes and (b) to find out how students cope with those challenges. This research used a qualitative method. This research used questionnaires and interviews to collect the data with 37 third- semester students of the English Education Department at IAIN Salatiga. The result showed that the challenges from students' perspectives are trouble in internet connection, insufficient storage space, couldn’t help understand the material, not actively following the class, getting distracted by others, tend to forget the class. The students try to overcome the challenges by looking for a stable signal, moving files, asking the teacher about the material they don't understand.
