Abstract
The study’s objectives are to find out the importance and performance of teachers’ compliment to the students in EFL classes. The students were from EFL classes on the secondary level (SMP and SMA) in Central Java, Indonesia. In this research, the researcher used a quantitative study. The techniques of collecting data were observation, interview, and questionnaire. The researcher used observation and interview to find out the situations, students’ reactions, and students’ opinions when teachers complimented them in order to conduct the questionnaire. The data analysis techniques used Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) and Importance Performance Analysis (IPA). The researcher found: 1) teachers’ compliment with name addition is considered important to the students in EFL classes, with 10 out of 15 situations are in the important quadrant of Importance Performance Analysis (IPA). 2) the students in EFL classes are satisfied with teachers’ performance on giving compliments with name addition with the score of Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) is 77.04%. 3) the situations that influence the importance and performance are: 1 situation with high importance and low performance, 9 situations with high importance and high performance, 5 situations with low importance and low performance, and no situation with low importance and high performance.
