Abstract

The purpose of the study was aimed to find out comparison of students' reading comprehension by using Cloze Test and Multiple-choice Test, and to find out which one is better for assessing student achievement in reading comprehension. The subject of this research were the students of VII E class of SMPN 2 Salatiga, who are consisting of 28 students. The object is students' reading comprehension score using Cloze Test and Multiple-choice Test. The methodology of this research was causal comparative between Cloze Test and Multiple-choice Test. The data was collected by using question within 10 question in each method. The result of the research is the average result of the student's score for the Cloze Test is 58,93, the average students’ score for Multiple-choice Test is only 49,64. From the scores, it can be seen that Cloze Test method is better than the Multiple-choice Test in reading comprehension. The significance value is 0.200 for the Cloze test and 0.762. The significance value is more than 0.05 (sig > 0.05), which means the data is homogeneous, the significance value of Kolmogorov Smirnov (Sig. 2-tailed row) is 0.200 for the Cloze test and 0.200 for the Multiple-choice. The significance value is more than 0.05 (sig > 0.05), which means the data is normally distributed. The alternative hypothesis of this research will be accepted if sig. (2-tailed) < 0.05 and rejected if sig. (2-tailed) > 0.05. The results of data analysis showed that sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000. If the value of 0.000, it means it less than 0.05, then Ha is accepted. In other words, there is a difference between the mean scores in the Cloze and Multiple-choice tests. Based on the result of this study, the two test methods have significant differences in results for testing students’ reading comprehension especially the Cloze Test method has better at testing students’ reading comprehension compared to the Multiple-choice Test.
