Abstract

This study aims to determine the role of colored words in the summary of students' grammar material. The objectives of the study were, (1) to examine the role of colored words in making grammar material summary, (2) to examine the most often used color in making grammar material summary to help the sixt semester students of English Education Department at IAIN Salatiga in understanding and memorizing the English grammar easily. Descriptive qualitative method was used in conducting this study and obtain the data. Data collected through semi-structured interviews with 15 sixth semester students of the English Education Department at IAIN Salatiga who were choosen using purposive sampling. According to the findings of this study, the use of colored words has many roles in making grammar material summary. Colored words in the summary of grammar material play a role in distinguishing grammar material, play a key role in the word search process, attract attention, help understand material, reduce cognitive overload, help remember and memorize. In addition, it is also known that the most frequently used colors are red and blue, which have advantages over other colors in terms of their physical appearance and effects. Thus, colored words can be added to the student summary in order to understand the English material well. Key Words: Colored Words, Summary, Grammar
