Abstract
Nuroniyah, Ummi, Wahidatun. 2021. Teachers’ Perspective on Non-Linguistic Factors Affecting Students’ Speaking Proficiency (A Case Study of Teachers in SMA ABBS Surakarta). A Graduating Paper, English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Institute for Islamic Studies Salatiga. Counselor: Aprilian Ria Adisti, M. Pd. The research’s purpose is to know the teachers’ perspective on non-linguistic factors that affect students’ speaking proficiency and to find out the dominant non-linguistic factor that affects students’ speaking proficiency regarded from teachers’ perspective. This research was conducted at SMA ABBS Surakarta in the academic year 2021/2022 from October 25 until November 8, 2021. This research was qualitative research that used a case study as the method. Observation, questionnaire, and an interview were used to gain the data which did by online due to the pandemic Covid-19. The participant of this research was 3 participants that were English teachers in grade 10 at SMA ABBS Surakarta. From the research examined, the result showed that regarded from teachers’ perspective, non-linguistic factors that affect students’ speaking proficiency was motivation. Meanwhile, the dominant non-linguistic factors that affect students’ speaking proficiency are motivation, environment, and shyness. Motivation and environment were interconnected and should be in balance to help the students give their best in a speaking activity. Shyness happened because the students were not used to speaking in English. Key Words: Speaking, Non-Linguistic Factor
