Abstract

Mudik or homecoming is considered to have several denotative and connotative religious meanings. It is an activity of returning to the hometown of urban people who live in big cities in Indonesia. This activity is commonly associated with the Muslim holiday, Eid al-Fitr. Some research results mention some meanings of mudik, from the spiritual, social, cultural, economic, psychological, to political meanings. The media, like a website, has determined its meaning by selecting facts and sources, editing, and posting them. Based on the researcher’s investigation, no research articles talk about the meaning of mudik with the media as their objects, including websites. This research article aimed to explain the sociocultural meaning of mudik on three (3) mudik photos and their captions on the NU Online website as the official website of Nahdlatul Ulama and the largest Islamic organization in the world. This research applied a descriptive qualitative method by describing the phenomenon of signs in photographs and their captions. The researcher adopted Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis technique to analyze the data. It was found that mudik in the photos and captions on the NU Online website has a sociocultural denotative meaning of religious silaturrahim (visits and souvenirs), the practice of religious teachings, and social services. The sociocultural connotative meaning of mudik is the meaning of the success of homecomers and their communal impression.
