Abstract

The objectives of this study are as follows: (1) To find out the kinds of assertive speech acts that are used in the English classroom. (2) To find out the contexts of situation and the reason when the teachers and students use assertive speech acts in the English classroom. (3) To find out the most frequent type of assertive speech acts used in the English classroom. This research used descriptive-qualitative method with the subjects are the English teacher and students from SMA Negeri 1 Bringin. This research used two classes, XI MIPA 3 and XI IPS 1. The result of the data in this research has been analyzed using Searle’s theories and Leech’s theories. The researcher concludes there were seven types of assertive speech acts from XI MIPA 3 class. There were 13 utterances of suggest, 7 utterances of explanation, 6 utterances of inform, 3 utterances of classify and boast, 4 utterances of remind, and 1 utterances of admit. The most frequent type of assertive speech acts used in this class is explanation. While from XI IPS 1, there were found six types of assertive speech acts. It consisting of 14 utterances of explanation, 9 utterances of inform, 4 utterances of assert, 2 utterances of announce, 1 utterance of remind and admit. The most frequent type of assertive speech acts used in this class is explanation. The contexts of situation when the teacher and students used speech acts are based on the learning activity.
