Abstract

The objectives of this study are to know and to analyze the factors that cause student’s difficulties in understanding narrative text of ninth grade at MTs n 2 Kota Magelang. The aims of this study are: (1) to know what are student’s difficulties in understanding narrative text. (2) to find out what factors of student’s difficulties in understanding narrative text. The type of this research was qualitative. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative approach. The subject of this study was the ninth grade students of MTs N 2 Kota Magelang in the academic year 2021/2022. The researcher used questionnaires, interviews, and documentation to gain the data. The questionnaires and documentation was used to find the student's difficulties in understanding narrative text. The interview was conducted to find out the factors that cause student's difficulties in understanding narrative text. Based on the data analysis, the researcher found that most of students still faced the difficulties in understanding narrative text. Kinds of difficulties faced by students were (1) students had difficulty in mastering vocabulary, (2) student’s difficulty in understanding narrative text was lack of fluency, (3) students had difficulty in understanding the material about narrative text, (4) student’s difficulty in understanding narrative text was difficulty level of the text (readability), (5) students had difficulty in processing information of the text. While, the factors that cause students difficulties in understanding narrative text was an interlingual difficulty (1) students lack mastering the English vocabulary, (2) the students do not know the correct pronunciation, (3) the students not fluent in reading because they do not like to read English text.
