Abstract

The objectives of the research are (1) to find out the difference between student's reading comprehension score before and after using snowball throwing method at the ninth grade students of SMP N 2 Susukan in the academic year 2022/2023 and (2) to find out the effectiveness of snowball throwing method to teach reading comprehension at the ninth grade students of SMP N 2 Susukan in the academic year 2022/2023. This research was quantitative research with pre-experimental method using one group pretest posttest design. The population of this research were 219 students of class IX SMP N 2 Susukan. The sampling was carried out by purposive sampling technique which involved only one study class, namely class IX G with a total of 31 students. The data collection technique used was a test, namely pre-test and post-test. The test instrument was in the form of multiple choice questions totaling 20 questions whose validity has been tested through validity, reliability and level of difficulty tests. Analysis of research data test with the help of software SPSS 22.0 version. The results of this research showed that there was a significant difference between the mean score of pre-test and the mean score of post-test. The mean score of post-test was higher than the mean score of pre-test (81.29 > 53.71). Then the t-test showed the value of sig. (2-tailed) was less than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05) and the value of tcount (16,516) was higher than ttable (2,042), so that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the snowball throwing method is effective to teach reading comprehension at the ninth grade students of SMP N 2 Susukan in the academic year 2022/2023. The implementation of snowball throwing method was successful to help and improve students’ reading comprehension learning activities. The students feel more enthusiastic and enjoy the learning because it was designed like a game.
