Abstract

Andriyani, A. (2022). Speech Act Analysis of Students‟ Presentation in WhatsApp Group Chats (a Study of English Education Department Student of IAIN Salatiga in the Academic Year of 2021/2022). Graduating Paper, English Education Department, State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Norwanto, S.Pd., M.Hum., Ph. D. This research aimed to identify the types of speech acts especially illocutionary acts, and to find out the most frequently used speech acts in students‟ presentations in the WhatsApp Group chat at IAIN Salatiga. Descriptive qualitative research was applied in this research. The partisipants consisted of 33 students of the 6B Semantics and Pragmatics class of the State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga in the academic year of 2021/2022. Data were collected by documentation. The result of this research showed four kinds of speech acts performed by the students: representatives, directives, commissives, and expressives. From the data of 46 utterances, representatives were performed 30 times, directives were performed seven times, commissives were performed three times, expressives performed six times. This study did not find declarations. The result indicated that representatives are the frequent types used in students‟ presentations in WhatsApp Group.
