Abstract

This research aimed to identify the students’ perception on the use of applications for Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) to support their English learning. The objectives of the study were, (1) to identify students’ perception on the use of applications for MALL in English learning, (2) to find out the applications for MALL that are often used for English learning, (3) to determine the benefits on the use of applications for MALL in English learning. The qualitative descriptive method was used in conducting this study and to obtain the data, the researcher used an open-ended questionnaire. The data in this research were analyzed inductively through data condensation, data display, and drawing a conclusion. The research participants were 30 students in the 8th semester of the English Education Department in the academic year of 2021/2022 UIN Salatiga. According to the findings of this study, 97% of total respondents have a positive response; they think that learning English become more enjoyable and practical, increased their knowledge of English, and improved their English skills. The ease of access to the internet makes it easier for them to find the materials. The other 3% think that it has a negative impact on the students. The findings also showed that the most used applications for English learning among the students were YouTube, Instagram, Duolingo, and Spotify. The findings implied that applications for MALL can be an alternative as a medium and source of learning for teachers and students.
