Abstract

The aim of this research are to answer the questions of how is the profile of students’ ability in writing, whether any improvement of students’ ability in writing after the use of concept sentence technique, and to what extent is the improvement of students’ ability in writing after the use of concept sentence technique. This study uses a classroom action research. The subjects of the study are the third English Department students at IAIN Salatiga. The approach of the research used is qualitative and quantitative. Meanwhile, test, observation and documentation are used as the techniques of collecting the data. The results of the research showed that the use of concept sentence technique to improve the students’ writing skills run successfully. It can be seen that the mean of pre-test and post-test of cycle II (72.94 and 82.00) increases from the mean of pre-test and post-test of cycle I (62.17 and 72.86). In cycle I, the students who passed the passing grade were 31.4% and 65.7% in which the mean of pre-test and post-test were 62.17 and 72.86. Meanwhile, the result of cycle II shows that the students got the score higher than the passing grade was 57.2% and 94.3% in which the mean of pre-test was 72.94 and the mean of post-test was 82.00. The improvement of cycle I was 34.3% and 37.1% in the cycle II. It means that the improvement of cycle I to the cycle II was 2.8%. Moreover, the T-table with N-1 (N=35) is 2.032 and the T-test of cycle I was 13.977 and 18.414 in the cycle II. It means that the value of the T-test is higher than the T-table. In a brief, it can be concluded that the use of concept sentence technique is significant to improve students’ writing ability
