Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the profile of English achievement especially in speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of MAN Salatiga. This study was also intended to give some contributions regarding the sources of the use of group investigation (GI) and speaking skill. The writer had chosen the eleventh grade students of MAN Salatiga in the academic year 2015/2016 and with 36 students as the subjects. The profile of students’ achievement in speaking skill was taken from the students’ score before the researcher doing classroom action research. By using mean formula the researcher found that the average of students’ speaking score before the implementation of GI technique is 66, 94. It means that the students speaking achievement was still low. Furthermore, to improve students’ speaking ability the researcher implemented GI technique to teach English, especially speaking skill. So that, the researcher found that there was an improvement of students’ achievement. There was an increasing mean of score from the first cycle and second cycle. In cycle I the mean of pre-test was 50, 28 and the mean of post-test was 58, 19. Whereas, in the second cycle, the researcher calculated the mean of pre-test was 63, 47 and the mean of post test was 74, 17. Therefore the researcher conclude that, group investigation technique is effective to be used in improving students speaking skill.
