Abstract

Teaching strategies in language learning are very diverse. A method or approach to teaching language used by the teacher in the classroom will greatly affect student learning outcomes. This certainly requires an approach that suits the needs of students in the teaching and learning process in order to obtain maximum results in learning the target language. Students' perceptions of the approach used by the teacher in the classroom will influence their attitudes towards the learning process. A good perception will also lead to a good attitude, which, of course, will have positive effects on student learning outcomes. This study aims to find out students' perceptions and attitudes towards the communicative language teaching approach in the classroom. The subjects of this study were students of class XI IPS 3 at MAN 2 Magelang. This research was conducted on 37 respondents in the questionnaire and on 5 respondents in the interview. The design of this study is qualitative research, which describes the findings in a descriptive way. The findings of this study are twofold: first, out of 37 respondents who answered the questionnaire, students' perceptions and attitudes towards communicative language teaching were very good, as evidenced by the high percentage who agreed in each statement. Second, the results of the interviews stated that the 5 selected respondents were very supportive of the use of communicative language teaching in the classroom. Based on this, it can be concluded that students' perceptions and attitudes towards communicative language teaching as an approach in language classes have good value.
