Abstract

The purpose of this study ware to determine students' perceptions of learning to use WhatsApp in the English learning process. This type of research is qualitative research. The subjects in this study were thirty-five students of the twelfth semester of the first semester of SMK Diponegoro. Questionnaires, interviews and documentation were used to collect data. Data were analyzed and interpreted through qualitative procedures. The findings show that students have a neutral perception about the use of WhatsApp in the online English learning process. Based on the results of the study indicate that the WhatsApp application used in the learning process is classified as less effective because of the lack of explanation of the material presented and the lack of communication between students and teachers makes students feel that learning using WhatsApp is not easy to understand, from students respondents saying that face-to-face learning is far easier to understand than learning to use WhatsApp. On the other hand, students have a positive perception of using the WhatsApp application to get information from teachers and friends in the process of learning English online.
