Abstract

English Department of Educational Faculty, State Islamic University (UIN) Salatiga. Advisor: Norwanto, S.Pd., M.Hum., Ph.D. This study investigates two English teachers with each of their students in classroom interactions at SMA Al Mas’udiyyah Bandungan used Grice’s cooperative principles. The researcher used design of descriptive qualitative method. The data were captured by vidio and audio recording, the data were then analyzed using descriptive qualitative method. The analysis of the teachers talk was categorized into their type based on the influence and also the non-observance Gricean Maxim. The purpose of this study are: To know what maxims are obeyed and flouted by teachers talk in SMA Al Mas’udiyyah Bandungan during classroom interactions, also to describe how the Non-Observance Gricean maxims occured by the teachers conversations in classroom interactions with students in SMA Al Mas’udiyyah Bandungan. The results of this study showed that: 1) The teachers talk in classroom obeyed all types of maxims, the maxim of quality, quantity, relation and manner. 2) The teachers talk in classroom flouted all of the four maxims. 3) Flouting a maxim, violating a maxim, infringing a maxim, opting out of a maxim, and suspending a maxim is parts of the non-observance Gricean maxim, all of them occured in the classroom except maxim violated, the non-observance Gricean maxim occured for any reasons.
