Abstract

This research aimed to identify Students’ perception on the use of Duolingo to develop students’ vocabulary knowledge. The objectives of the study were, (1) To identify the students’ perceptions on the use of Duolingo to develop students’ vocabulary knowledge. (2) To describe the challenges faced by the students and the solution on the use of Duolingo to develop students’ vocabulary knowledge. The qualitative method was used in conducting this study and to obtain the data, the researcher used interviews. The data in this research were analysed inductively through data condensation, data display, and drawing a conclusion. The research participants were 15 students in the 6th semester of the English Education Department in the academic year of 2021/2022 UIN Salatiga. According to the findings of this study. The respondents in this study gave their perceptions of using Duolingo based on three aspects of perception. Based on the affective aspect, the response from the respondents shows that they enjoy and exciting. From a cognitive aspect, most of the respondents agreed that Duolingo can be used as an English learning medium. Lastly, based on a conative aspect, all the respondents are able to mention the vocabulary they just obtained from Duolingo. The respondent shows the obstacles faced and solutions when using Duolingo. Based on their answers, There are some obstacles faced by the students. The problem with internet connection, confusing with the layout menu, and some that need a video feature. However, they still suggest using Duolingo by adding other learning resources alternative as a medium and source of learning for teachers and students while studying
