Abstract

Many experts in the field of education believe and prove that group work activities is very beneficial and has many positive effects on students. The purpose of this study was to find out students’ perception on group work activities in motivating English learning, and to find out about how group work can motivate students to learning English. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. This study used questionnaire, interview, and observation to collect data. The type of questionnaire used in this study was a closed questionnaire with scaled questions form. The questionnaire in this study were distributed directly to the respondents. Respondents who filled out the research questionnaire were students majoring in fourth semester of English Education Department academic year 2022/2023 at UIN Salatiga who had currently or have done group work activities in class. The type of interview used in this study is structured interview. The interview was conducted directly where the researcher had prepared questions before. Observation has done in a non-participant type when researcher conduct interview and distribute questioner. Data were analyzed and interpreted through descriptive qualitative procedures supplemented by data validation using data triangulation. The findings show that students give positive perception on group work activities in motivating English learning. Group work can motivate students in learning English because group work has strengths in it, that are: Group work can motivate students to actively contribute to the group, can communicate and interact well with friends, group work provides freedom and is free from pressure in expressing ideas, group work can foster better social interaction between students, group work can minimize errors in doing assignments, meaning time efficiency in doing assignments as well as studying.
