Abstract

The purpose of the study was to know the students’ challenges and strategies when they are joining academic writing class on talent scouting program batch 2022 of UIN Salatiga. The research was qualitative research. The respondent were 25 students of Telent Scouting Program Batch 2022 of UIN Salatiga. Questionnaire and interview were conducted in order to collect the data. The data was alaysed and interpreted through qualitative procedure. The findigs indicated the students face challenges such as lack of vocabularies, lack of grammar mastery, writing weakness, negative environment, lack of choosing correct words, lack of motivation, and lack of presenting clear idea. The findings also showed the strategies used by students such as a social strategies; asking help, cooperating, and practice with others, memory strategies; watching movie, rewriting words, using dictionary, and repetition, compensatory strategies; using translation tools, utilizing existing vocabulary, and consulting dictionaries, metacognitive strategies; practicing writing frequently, using tools to enhance their writing, creating a plan, extensive reading, and discussing specific topics with friends, cognitive strategy; organizing ideas, managing time effectively, seeking inspiration from existing writings, and creating a conducive environment for learning, affective strategies; remembering their goals, providing self-motivation, giving themselves positive perceptions, taking breaks to breathe and find more references, approaching writing calmly and enjoying the process, and believing in their abilities.
