Abstract

This study aims to find out the students' difficulties in reading comprehension of the descriptive text of the seventh-grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Suruh and also to find out the causal factors of students' difficulties in reading comprehension of the descriptive text of the seventh- grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Suruh in the academic year 2022/2023. The research's subject was 20 seventh-grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Suruh. In this research, the researcher used qualitative research, primarily descriptive qualitative research. In this study, data were collected using a questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire was used to collect data on students' reading comprehension difficulties. Meanwhile, interviews were used to collect data on causal factors of students' difficulties in reading comprehension. From the study, the researcher concluded that: (1) There were several aspects found in students' difficulties in reading comprehension of the descriptive text of seventh-grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Suruh. These difficulties included difficulties in determining main ideas, difficulties in finding specific information, difficulties in making inferences, difficulties in identifying references, and difficulties in understanding the meaning of the word. (2) There were several causal factors of students' difficulties in reading comprehension of the descriptive text of seventh-grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Suruh. The factors that influenced students' difficulty in reading comprehension of descriptive texts were students' background knowledge, teachers' technique and students' environment.
