Abstract

ABSTRACT Habsyi, A. K. U. (2023). Conversational Implicature Analysis of Teacher and Students‟ Conversation in Teaching Speaking at SMP Muhammadiyah Plus Salatiga in the Academic Year of 2022/2023. Graduating Paper. English Education Department Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Islamic University (UIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Hammam M. Pd., Ph. D. The aim of this study is to know the language function and contextual meaning of the conversational implicature used in the class VIII grade. This study applies descriptive qualitative research based on Grice‘s theory. The data in this study are conversational implicatures that are transcribed into written text. The result of this study indicates that there are three types of conversation implicatures, namely general conversational implicatures, scaled conversational implicatures, and special conversational implicatures. The result of the conversation between teacher and students utterances indicating conversational implicature contained in Grice‘s theory. The result of the study concludes that language functions, are directive, interactional, and phatic while the function used by students is a referential function.
