Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the correlation of grammar mastery in simple present tense and writing ability in report text (A correlational study at the fourth semester students of English education department batch 2021 of UIN Salatiga). The method used in this research is a quantitative method with a correlational design. The collection technique used two tests; Grammar mastery test that consisting of 20 items of multiple choice and five items of essay; for the writing test, the researcher used a report text essay test to the students. This research uses 18 students in the fourth semester students of English education department batch 2021 of UIN Salatiga as the sample of research. From the calculation by using the product moment formula in SPSS 25, it was found that the mean of the grammar mastery test in simple present tense is 74, and the mean score of report text writing test is 78, 12 of 18 students or 66.7% of the students are levelled in moderate category for their grammar mastery in simple present tense and writing ability in report text. Based on the calculated correlation coefficient, this research has very strong correlation, because the correlation coefficient is 0.925. The degree of significance 5% is 0.468. it means r-count is higher than r-table (0.925 > 0.468). Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Thus, there is significant correlation between grammar mastery in simple present tense and writing ability in report text at the fourth semester students of English education department batch 2021 of UIN Salatiga.
