Abstract
This research aims (1) to find the types of deixis used in teaching and learning process at English Education Department of UIN Salatiga and (2) to find the function of each deixis used in teaching and learning process at English Education Department of UIN Salatiga. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The techniques used to collect the data are observation and audiovisual material. The data was analyzed with three steps namely data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion/verification. This research revealed that there are three types of deixis found in teaching and learning process, they are person deixis, spatial deixis, and temporal deixis. Person deixis consists of first person, second person, and third person. First person deixis is used to point the speaker, in the form of subject pronoun, object pronoun, and possessive adjective. Second person deixis is used to point the addressee, in the form of subject pronoun, possessive adjective, and possessive pronoun. Third person deixis is used to point person or object who is not the speaker or the addressee, in the form of subject pronoun and object pronoun. Spatial deixis is used to point the place related to the participant, it can be far or close in the form of adverb of place and demonstrative. It also can be in the form of motion verb and prepositional phrase. Temporal deixis is used to point the time related to the participant, it can be in the past, the present, the future, and specific part of day. It also can be in the form of demonstrative using proximal form.
