Abstract

This study aimed to know how the pre-service teachers’ implementation, difficulties, and strategies of using EMI in teaching English during the internship program of International Class Program (ICP) batch 2019 of UIN Salatiga in academic year 2021/2022. The research was qualitative research. The respondents of this research were chosen randomly from the pre-service teachers of the International Class Program batch 2019 of UIN Salatiga that included in English Education Department. During the process of gathering data, three techniques were used: interview, document, and digital material. The data was analyzed through qualitative procedure. The findings showed that the pre-service teachers implemented EMI in teaching English during the internship program by using English in the opening, learning process, closing, and interacting with the students. The findings also showed that the pre-service teachers had difficulties of using EMI, such as lack of English proficiency, no clear EMI teaching method, students’ ability, and no training or program of EMI. Moreover, the pre-service teachers showed that they used L1 and models to help them in using EMI in teaching English. Keywords: Implementation of EMI, Difficulties, Strategies.
