Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know the English students’ speaking performance before and after using talking sticks as a speaking strategy. This study employed a quantitative methodology and pre-experimental approach for analysis. During the academic year 2022/23, only one class of 19 X ATPH students at SMK Dharma Lestari participated in the experiment. The study score was determined from a pre-test and post-test. The students’ scores improved between the Pre-test and Post-test. On the pre-test, the greatest score was 57, and the lowest was 38. The mean was 47.37, the standard deviation was 6.833 and the standard error was 1.55. The highest result on the post-test was 81, while the lowest score was 62. The post-test average was 73.58, the standard deviation was 5.263, and the standard error was 1.207. On the basis of the data, it can be concluded that sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000 and the T-test is 18.710, which indicated that the value of sig. (2-tailed) is less than 0.05 and the T-test is greater than the t-table, thus Ha is accepted. Moreover, the average value is 26.21. According to the results, the researcher recommends the use of talking stick to teach speaking skills, because of its’ effectiveness as proven by this study.
