Abstract
The objectives of the study are to find out the English teaching method, to analyze how the teacher implements the method, to find out the English teacher’s obstacles and the solutions when teaching the deaf students at State Special Needs School (SLBN) Salatiga in the academic year 2023/2024. The research method is qualitative research using interviews, documentation, and observation as data collection methods. The interview was done with the subject in this research i.e. Mrs. Emma as the English teacher, Mr. Wawan as the 7th grade classroom teacher, and Mrs. Reni as the curriculum staff. The observation was done to know the English teaching methods, the implementation of English teaching methods, the teacher’s obstacles and solutions when teaching deaf students. The documentation was done to know the English teaching methods, the implementation of English teaching methods, the teacher’s obstacles and the solutions when teaching deaf students. The researcher found there are five English teaching methods to teach deaf students in State Special Needs School (SLBN) Salatiga, namely: total communication method, manual method, oral method, assignment method, and questioning-answering method. In the implementation of the teaching methods, the teacher more often used the total communication method by did five activities when teaching English to deaf students: the teacher asks to pray together and checks the students’ attendance, the teacher did the stimulating question, the teacher explains the material, the teacher gives an assignment to the deaf students, the teacher reviews all of the materials that has been explained. There are three teacher’s obstacles and solutions in teaching English to deaf students, namely: deaf students have limited vocabulary, so the teacher must slowly teach them; the students often misunderstand the concepts or the words, so the teacher must be clear in delivering material to deaf students; the deaf students easy to forget the material, so the teacher has to repeat in delivering the material.
