Abstract

Khusnah, Elis Yulfatul. 2023. Improving Students' Mastery of the Simple Present Tense By the Substitution Drills Technique For the Seventh-Grade Students of MTs Al-Ittihad Pabelan In the Academic Year 2022/2023. A Graduating Paper, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, English Education Departement, State Islamic University (UIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Dr. Sari Famularsih, M.Pd. This research was aimed at improving the students' mastery of the simple present tense by the substitution drills technique. This research answered two questions: (1) How is the implementation of students' mastery of the simple present tense by the substitution drills technique for the seventh- grade students of MTs Al-Ittihad Pabelan in the academic year 2022/2023? (2) What are the results from the implementation of student's mastery of the simple present tense after using the substitution drills technique for the seventh-grade students of MTs Al-Ittihad Pabelan in the academic year 2022/2023? The material that was given to the students was simple present tense. The subject of the research was twenty-eight students for seventh-grade students of MTs Al-Ittihad Pabelan 2022/2023. The methodology of this research used Classroom Action Research (CAR). It was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection. From this research, the researcher concludes that the student's mastery of the simple present tense is improved from cycle one and cycle two by the substitution drills technique. The improvement of the study was shown when the researcher conducted cycle 2. The passing grade was 65, and the target of the passing grade was 85%. The outcome of the post-test of cycle 2 was 89,28% of the students. The target of cycle two was achieved, so the researcher stopped the research. It means that classroom action research using the substitution drills technique can improve students' mastery of the simple present tense. Keywords: Students’ mastery of the simple present tense, substitution drills technique
