Abstract

This study aims to know the students' results in writing English recount text after being taught using pair work versus group work and comparing pair work and group work in writing English recount text. This study applies a pre-experimental design and a quantitative approach for analysis. The experiment was carried out with only one group of 24 students of VII B at SMPIT Nidaul Hikmah in the academic year 2022/2023. This study's score was obtained using a pre-test and a post-test. This research showed that the group work method is more effective than the pair work method when applied to teaching English recount text. The students' results show this after being taught using pair work versus group work. Based on the calculations and the result, the average score of pre-tests (60) is lower than the post-test score (88,75). After using the pair work and group work methods, there is also an increase of 28.75%. The average score on the pre-test for pair work is 57.5, while it is 62.5 for group work. However, after treatment and post-test, the average value of pair work increased by 27.5 points to 85. While group work increased by 30 points to 92.5. This reveals that group work is more efficient than pair work. The N-gain test results indicate that the N-gain score of group work is 0.8, which places in the g > 0.8 while the N-gain score of pair work is 0.64, which places it in the 0.3 ≤ g ≤ 0.7. Although the N-gain score for pair work is medium, indicating an increase after treatment, the N-gain score for group work is high, showing excellent performance. Based on these findings, the researcher proposes using group work to teach writing English Recount text.
