Abstract

Solikhah, Aimatus. 2023. “The Correlation Between Reading Motivation and Their Reading Comprehension of Students’ at SMP Dharma Lestari Salatiga in the Academic Year 2023/2024”. A Graduating Paper, English Education Department Teacher Training and Education Faculty, State Islamic University (UIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Dr. Setia Rini, S.Pd., M.Pd. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between reading motivation and their reading comprehension of students at SMP Dharma Lestari Salatiga in the 2023/2024 Academic Year. This research is a quantitative correlation research. The sample taken by the researcher is class IX.D. This research was conducted at Dharma Lestari Middle School Salatiga. The participants were 27 students in the ninth grade at SMP Dharma Lestari Salatiga in the 2023/2024 Academic Year. This study uses data collection methods in the form of questionnaires and tests. Questionnaire data is in the form of statements regarding reading motivation in descriptive text whose validity is tested by validity and reliability tests. The researcher used a questionnaire which totaled 32 items of reading motivation which was used to investigate students' reading motivation in descriptive terms. The test data is in the form of multiple choice questions whose validity is tested by testing the validity and reliability. The researcher used a test instrument which consisted of 20 questions regarding descriptive text which was used to measure students' reading ability in descriptive terms. The data analysis technique used is the correlation test using the Person Product Moment Correlation Coefficients in SPSS 24. The resulting questionnaire on the reading motivation of students showed that low motivation is the most felt type of reading motivation. Meanwhile, the resulting test of the reading comprehension of students showed the category of enough is the most felt type of reading comprehension. The significance value of the correlation between reading motivation and reading comprehension is 0.033 < 0.05, so there is a correlation that correlates with the degree of correlation, namely 0.411, which means that the correlation is moderate and the correlation is positive. So, Ha is accepted as a result of the research and Ho is rejected as a result of the research. Keywords: Correlation, Reading Motivation, Reading Comprehension
