Abstract

The research objective was to know the students’ abilities in writing narrative text, to find out the most common level of students’ abilities in writing narrative text, and to find out how teachers cope with the different levels of students’ writing abilities. The method of this research was mix method (quantitative and qualitative) research. This study used a test and interview to collect data. The population of this research was eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Pabelan. It consisted of six classes; the number of the population was 205. The sample of this research was 31 students, two English teacher and the data collection technique was purposive sampling. The result shows that nine students got a very good category, and the percentage was 29,03%. The mean of students’ abilities in writing narrative text was 70,12. It can be concluded that the students’ abilities to write narratives was in the very good category. The most common level of students’ abilities in writing narrative text in eighth grade of SMP N 1 Pabelan was in the excellent category. The teachers coped with different levels of abilities by treating each level of students’ abilities differently.
