Abstract
This study aims to find out 1) the challenges of students in online learning; 2) the types of strategies used by students during online learning. This type of research used qualitative research. The participants were students of SMPN 2 bringin, which consisted of 15 students as the sample using a random sampling technique. While the method of collecting the primary data was interview. The research results show that: 1) based on the results of interviews show that student challenges during online learning include motivation (understand the material presented by the teacher, students can do homework, to be able to speak English fluently, get good grades, can continue their studies abroad), attitude(boring,there is no interaction between teachers/friends, hard to understand the material), competing priorities (play game online,watch TV, watch youtube, play Instagram), academic confidence(not confident with the task that has been done), technology confidence (difficulty when using google classroom, bad internet connection, internet quota runs out quickly, phone memory is full), social support (lack of social support). Based on the 2) the strategies most students use during online learning are cognitive strategies, namely by taking notes and summarizing.
