Abstract

ABSTRACT Adiba, Binta. (2023). Students’ Perceptions: The Use of Spotify Application to Improve Listening Skills of English Foreign Language at English Education Department UIN Salatiga in The Academic Year 2022/2023. Teacher Training and Educational Faculty. State Islamic University (UIN) Salatiga.Counselor: Dra. Widyastuti, M.Pd. Listening skills are the earliest skills of language where there is a process of hearing and capturing the intent of the speaker so that there is a process of understanding by the listener. Therefore students often hear what they hear but are confused by what they hear. One aspect that is certain in the teaching and learning process is the selection of the right media to improve vocabulary mastery and listening skills, which is also one of the reasons for using the Spotify music application as a learning medium. This study aims to identify student perceptions, describe the benefits and difficulties of students regarding the use of songs and podcasts on the Spotify application to improve listening skills. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. Data collection was carried out by observation, questionnaires, interviews and documentation. Type of the questionnaire used in this study was a closed questionnaire with a scale question from. The questionnaire in this study was distributed directly to respondent.The type of interview used in this research is a structured interview. The research subjects were students of the English Language Education Department at UIN Salatiga in the academic year 2022/2023. 29 students filled out a questionnaire and 6 students with the highest questionnaire scores were taken to answer interviews. Observations were made with the non-participant type when researchers conducted interviews and distributed questionnaires. Data in analyzed through qualitative descriptive procedures equipped with data validation using data triangulation. The result of this research is to find that Spotify is an interesting application and makes users of this application feel happy and motivated. It also helps them improve their listening skills more easily. Learning to listen by listening to English songs and podcasts on the Spotify app can improve listening and pronunciation skills. Lots of new knowledge people discover, Spotify allows students to know some accents in English, cultural understanding, relaxation, entertainment, and the discovery of new music or topics and new vocabulary. The challenge faced by students was when they encountered songs with rap music with fast intonation and pronunciation, and also when listening to podcasts they found podcasts using different accents with fast intonation and pronunciation, so they had difficulty understanding them. It can be concluded that students have positive perceptions about using songs and podcasts on the Spotify application. Keywords: Student Perception, Spotify, Listening.
