Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the profile of students' descriptive text writing skills before and after the Roundtable technique, as well as the effectiveness of the Roundtable technique as a technique on students' descriptive text writing skills. This study used a quantitative method True-experimental. Two classes were designed as experimental and control classes. The experimental class was taught with the Roundtable technique, while the control class was taught without the Roundtable technique. The population of class Vlll students at SMP Islam Karangrayung consisted of 124 students, and the samples were 44 students (22 students for the experimental class and 22 students for the control class). The sampling technique was purposive sampling. In addition, the research was carried out through the following steps: giving a pre-test, applying the treatment, and giving a post-test. The data were obtained through written tests. The findings of this study showed that the pre-test mean score (46.36) was lower than the post-test mean score (71.59). The students' mean score increased to 25.23 points after they learned the descriptive text of the Roundtable technique. The T-test result (12.86) is higher than the t-table (1.721). Then the N-gain is 0.47, placing it in the medium-level effectiveness category at the interval 0.3 ≤ g ≤ 0.7. So, it is evident that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Roundtable technique is effective in teaching descriptive text because it shows a significant effect on writing in descriptive text in class Vlll students of SMP Islam Karangrayung.
