Abstract

Most Indonesian University- students need more time to learn English in the classroom with the lecturer. Autonomous learning strategies can be used as an alternative strategy to solve this problem. The students and the lecturer must also find the best strategies to learn outside and inside the classroom. This study aimed to describe the types of students’ autonomous English learning strategies and find the difficulties and the strategies to face the difficulties. This study used descriptive qualitative research and the subject was fourth semester of English education department students, UIN Salatiga. The data was collected using an open-ended questionnaire, close-ended questionnaire, interview, and documentation. The result revealed that cognitive strategies are the most chosen strategies, followed by socio-affective, and the least chosen are metacognitive strategies. Besides that, the students faced various difficulties, and most of the respondents mentioned inconsistency as the main difficulty in planning, practicing, evaluating, and building up the motivation to study, while inactive friends to study with are the main difficulty in cooperating with others. However, most of respondents still need clarification to find the strategies to solve their problems/ difficulties.
