Abstract

The objectives of this study were to know the criteria for paraphrasing by fifth-semester students in Academic Writing Subjects, to know the techniques of paraphrasing are frequently used, and to find out the obstacles of fifth-semester students of the English Education Department in paraphrasing in Academic Writing Subjects. This study used a qualitative research design. The subject of this study was thirty-one students of the fifth-semester students of the English Education Department at UIN Salatiga who had completed academic writing subject in the academic year of 2022/2023. The data was obtained using interviews and students' written documents. This study interviewed six students to find out the obstacles in writing paraphrasing. The type of interview used in this research was semi-structured interview. In addition, the students' written documents were obtained from the research proposal, which the students wrote. They were used to analyze students' paraphrasing techniques and their criteria. The data analysis was done in three steps: reading/memoing, classifying and describing. The study found that the criteria for paraphrasing of fifth-semester students is unsatisfactory. The students only tend to have different vocabulary and retain the same meaning. Furthermore, the students frequently used paraphrasing techniques, namely changing vocabulary with synonyms. The obstacles faced by fifth-semesters are finding synonymous words, changing the text's structure, and retaining the same meaning. The solutions that could be done were reading the literature, understanding the text, using an application of paraphrasing tools and an online dictionary, and rephrasing the sentence.
