Abstract

This research aims to find out the pre-service teachers’ challenges in managing the English classroom during teaching practicum and how they overcome the challenges. This research generally answered 2 research questions: (1) What are the challenges faced by pre-service teachers in managing the English classroom during teaching practicum? (2) How does the pre-service teacher overcome the challenges of managing the English classroom during teaching practicum? The methodology of this research is qualitative method. The researcher uses interview, and observation to collect data. The participants of this research are 15 eight-semester students of the English Education Department who had done the teaching practicum at Junior High School. To answer the research questions, the researcher classifies the challenges into four categories, namely, classroom environment, students’ attitude and language level, and students’ explicit acts of misbehavior. The results show that there are ten challenges faced by the pre-service teachers during teaching practicum as follows: 1) The difficulty of controlling the classroom and students; 2) Lack of school facilities; 3) Noise from outside; 4) Less conducive classroom, 5) Students' lack of interest in English; 6) Students’ lack of vocabulary mastery; 7) Students’ lack of grammar mastery; 8) Students’ difficulty in understanding English; 9) Not paying attention during the lesson; and 10) Students being noisy. There are twelve strategies to overcome the challenges as follows: 1) Giving verbal intervention; 2) Setting up other methods; 3) Borrowing facilities, bringing theirs stuffs, and consulting with teachers; 4) Closing the door; 5) Stopping the lesson for a while; 6) Mastering the class; 7) Making fun learning; 8) Giving encouragement, motivation, praise, and positive messages; 9) Helping the students in the classroom; 10) Speaking in English; 11) Giving verbal and nonverbal interventions; 12) Giving consequences.
