Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the students’ perceptions regarding the use of English and Arabic as media of instruction in the classroom, and to identify students’ problems and solutions in carrying out the program in the classroom. The subjects were twenty-eight students enrolled in International Class Program of State Islamic University (UIN) Salatiga. The methods used to obtain the data are questionnaire and interview. The data was analyzed and interpreted through qualitative method. The findings of the study suggest that students hold positive perceptions toward the use of English and Arabic as media of instruction in the classroom. They value this program as beneficial and acknowledge the improvement in their language skills since enrolling the program. They also perceive that the implementation of this program is running well. However, the study identified several problems faced by students during the program, including their lack of language skill – which hinders effective communication and comprehension of lesson content, limited opportunities for using the target language outside the classroom – which impede their language development for communicating in the class, a lack of confidence in participating in class activities, and a delay in understanding and expressing themselves due to their tendency to rely on translation rather than thinking directly in the target language.
