Abstract

The objectives of this research were (1) to find out the types of code-mixing and dominant types of code-mixing in the English class of the first semester PGMI department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of UIN Salatiga; (2) to find out the reasons of the use of code-mixing in the English class of the first semester PGMI department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of UIN Salatiga. This research uses descriptive qualitative research design. To collect the data, the researcher employed observation, interviews, and documentation techniques. The data sources for this study consisted of students in English classes at the PGMI department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty at UIN Salatiga, as well as the lecturer who teach English course in the PGMI department of Teacher Training and Education at UIN Salatiga. The findings of this study consist of 98 utterances of code-mixing that classified based on the types as follows: insertion of word 72 utterances (73,47%) is the dominant type of code-mixing, insertion of phrase 15 utterances (15,31%), insertion of clause 1 utterance (1,2%), insertion of idiom 1 utterance (1,2%), insertion of hybrid 8 utterances (8,16%), insertation of repetition 1 utterance (1,2%). And the reason the lecturer employ code-mixing is the low of students’ English proficiency and lack of motivation and vocabulary. While the reason by students are they wants to show their proficiency in English as a prestige. In the other hand, several students use code-mixing because they lack of vocabulary in English.
