Abstract

Some students have to do remedial in summative tests to get passing grades in English subject. Besides, there are some existing challenges among students in the research site: 1) The students have difficulties with English learning, 2) Lack of supporting media that attracts interest, and 3) Mobile phones have not been maximized in learning. The researcher pays more attention to the difficulties of arranging noun phrases because it is very influential in mastering English, and the mobile application is proposed to develop. The researcher framed the following research objectives: 1) To describe the students’ need for Fun English on Noun Phrase (FEON) application to speed the student's mastery of English noun phrases, 2) To describe the form of Fun English on Noun Phrase (FEON) application to facilitate the student's mastery of English noun phrases, and 3) To find the effectiveness of using Fun English on Noun Phrase (FEON) application to facilitate students' mastery of English noun phrases. The researcher used the Research and Developments method that started with need assessment, planning and product design, small scale try-out, earlier revision, larger scale try-out, revision, effectiveness test, the final revision, and dissemination. The subjects are 30-70 from the teachers and the students of MA Salafiyah Kajen Margoyoso Pati. The instruments are questionnaires, interviews, and tests. The qualitative data is explained descriptively and evaluatively, and SPSS calculates the quantitative. The students need solutions for difficulties in English, they need supporting media that attracts interest, and they believe mobile phones can be optimized for learning. They need media with easier explanations, many examples, exercises, an Islamic nuances appearance, and attractive designs. The research site has enough potential to apply innovative media. The questionnaire scores strengthen that students strongly agree about learning-based smartphone application media development. The main suggestions from the expert material validator, media validator, and the respondents are to improve the display and add more exercises. After the final product revision, FEON media has been examined. The paired test shows the effect of FEON. The students’ achievement is better after using FEON. FEON application can be installed by students and teachers who have similar needs in English noun phrases learning.
